There is no federal law governing grandparent visitation rights, and states vary on this issue. Formerly, all 50 states allowed grandparents to ask the courts to consider their request for visitation. Before you do anything else, be sure to find out your state’s law on the issue. If you are unable to work out an arrangement with the child’s parents, you may be able to find a mediator or make a request of the courts.
